I know I promised these a while back but better late than never? :o)
These are pictures from my Iceland trip during Memorial Day. I'd been dying to go to Iceland for a while and since my wanderlust was out of control, I bought tickets pretty much on a whim. And yes, from Austin, travel time was practically 2 full days (with extra long layovers in NYC I got to go out and get my monthly fill of NYC) but I have to say it was so worth it. Iceland is amazingly beautiful. The pictures don't really do it justice.
Some general stuff. Since we were only going to be in Iceland for 4 days, we decided to make Reykjavik home base. We rented a car which made things super convenient. The only problem was that none of us knew how to drive a manual and the car rental company lost our reservation. After a few unsuccessful attempts at driving a manual, we decided to forgo the SUV for a sedan (a little bit of a mistake - a SUV would've been a much better choice for the Icelandic roads). Instead of getting a hotel, we decided to get an AirBNB in the center of Reykjavik which was inspired. It gave us so much more flexibility than a hotel.
Since we only had 4 day in Iceland, we really packed our itinerary to the seems but the sun never really sets during spring/summer so you really feel like you have so much time on your hands.

So Day 1...
Since we knew we'd be pretty jet-lagged on day 1, we decided to go easy and spend the day relaxing at the Blue Lagoon. We splurged and got the package with all the bells and whistles which is not really worth it. We started the day with lunch at Lava, the restaurant at Blue Lagoon, which was phenomenal (probably the best place we ate). Then we just relaxed in the lagoon. The one thing I do have to say is DON'T GET YOUR HAIR WET in the lagoon. It really drys out your hair and it took weeks for my hair to feel normal again. The lagoon itself really is beautiful and yes its so cold outside that you can't believe you're actually wearing a bikini, but the water really is so warm that you forget about the cold in no time.
We headed back to Reykjavik after several hours at the Blue Lagoon and wandered around the city a little. We discovered this amazing little coffee drink called a swiss mocha. Sooo good. We had dinner at a gastropub called Bunk Bar, which was pretty much the first place we saw but the food ended up to be pretty good. After dinner, we stopped by the grocery store and picked up some essentials/snacks for the long trips over the next few days (and by essentials I mean cookies hehe). And even after a day of just relaxing, I think I fell asleep as soon my my head touched a pillow!
That's all for now. I'll post day 2 tomorrow.
